Ustad Daman (1st January 1910 – December 3, 1984) Was a Legendary Punjabi Poet, Writer And Mystic. Humdam Was His First Pen Name Before Daman. Ustad Daman Wrote Many Songs for The Pakistan Film Industry. The Punjabi Poetry Book 'Daman Day Moti' Is The Collection His Poetry.
Ustad Daman Was A Tailor By Profession. Ustad Daman Resided In Hujra-e-Shah Hussain In Lahore. The Great Punjabi Sufi Poet Shah Hussain Resided In It. Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Habib Jalib, Akhtar Sain, Qamar Yorash, Muhammad Ali Actor And Noor Jahan Were Some Notable Visitors Of This Place. The Doors of His House Remained Open For Common Public As Well. His House Became Second Focal Point For The intellectuals of Lahore After Pak Tea House. This House Is Now In Very Miserable Condition. Ustad Daman Academy Established By His Student Named Advocate Muhammad Iqbal Muhammad Is Established In This House Now.
Once in 1930 Ustad Daman Stitched a Suit For Mian Iftikharuddin (Politician, Member of Independence Movement And Owner of English Newspaper Pakistan Times Lahore) Who Got Much Impressed By His Inspiring Poetry. He Invited Ustad Daman To Recite His Poems At a Public Meeting Of The Indian National Congress. Pandit Nehru Was Also Present at This Meeting. After Inspiring By His Revolutionary Anti-Imperialist Poetry, Pandit Nehru Awarded Him The Title Of ‘The Poet of Freedom’. Ustad Daman Was Part of The Struggle For Independence From British Rule. Ustad Daman Believed That All The Communities of Indian Sub-Continent Remain Lived United. He Was An Opponent of The Partition Of India. He Has The Ideology Of Left. During Partition Of Sub-Continent, His Shop And House Were burned. His Wife And Daughter Were Killed. Ustad Daman Even Decided To Stay In Lahore. Ustad Daman Was An Opponent Of Civilian/Military Dictatorship, Corruption And Hypocrisy. His Struggle Against Dictatorship In Pakistan Is Very Glorious. He Was Arrested And Jailed A Lot Of Times. He Struggled Against The Military Dictatorship of Gen. Ayub Khan,Gen Yahya And Gen. Zia Ul Haq. Daman Was Also Against Corruption And Bad Governance In The Country. The Lower Class of The Society Loved Ustad Daman For His Passion For Humanity And Struggle For The Rights Of The Labour Class.
Pandit Nehru Invited Ustad Daman To India in 1952 And Requested Him To Stay Permanently There In India As He Had This Fear That Due To His Left Nationalist Ideas, There Will Not be Much Respect For Him In Pakistan. But Ustad Daman Told Nehru That He Will Live in Lahore, Even if He is Put in Jail.
