The Death of Maharajah Ranjeet Singh
This Day that year of 1839 on 27th June Sher-i-Punjab left this mortal world ...and the from this day onwards within next couple of years the curtain was drawn on the Khalsa Durbar ..The man who rose to be the first Maharajah ,and the most notable ,of Punjab after the King Porus over 2000 years ago , was born in 1780 to Maha Singh .
The Maharajah had been ill for quite some days and for the last couple of days had been performing sankalp and giving away in charities thousands of rupees and gold and cows and buffaloes and horses and elephants and whetever the Brahmins advised to ward off the inevitable .
On 20th of June the Maharajah in consultation with his vizier Azizuddin made a formal declaration of succession that had already been announced as far back as 1816 on Kharak Singh .The declaration was made the next day .
After a review of troops by Dhian Singh and Kharak Singh -Maharajah's successor was appointed officially by announcement .
On 22nd June 1839 in preparations of the departure of the Lion of Punjab a bier worth Rupees 10,00,000 was kept ready to be given in alms .The gate keepers of the eastern , western and southern gates and the gates of Hazoori Bagh were ordered to guard the gates carefully and to allow nobody to come .However the Maharajah gained consciousness and he thought it was all pre-mature .Alms were given to the needy and poor over 100 horses and 500 cows apart from Gold and silver harnesses were given in sankalp.
On 23rd June the Sarkar (Maharajah) went for his morning drive ,performed a sankalp in which 51,000 Rupees were given to the Brahmins apart from Horses and Elephants and gold utensils .
On the 24th June the Sarkar went to Baradariwala Garden and went to see a sadhu and again performed a sankalp .
On the 25th June he was too weak to get up and lost consciousness and because of heat in the Sheesh Mahal he be taken on the ground floor -but the Maharajah showed his displeasure in the idea .By afternoon his pulse became weak and intermittent and both physical and mental movements were therefore suspended .
On the 26th of June he was administered a new medicine -as he had thus far been taking by grounding real pearls with strength boosting Indian medicines .This revived him a little and immediately a sankalp of eight lakh rupees ,his special conveyance , his elephants with gold and silver howdahs and horses with gold and silver trappings was made .
The Sarkar then undid the weapons from his waist and handed them over to his servants with the words the last moment had drawn near .Hearing this -a loud wailing of servants and his family around him could be heard .The Maharajah was himself , in tears .A sankalp of 51 cows , 11,000 gold ducats , many swift footed horses and several suits were given .
It is at this moment that Bhai Govind Ram raised the subject of "Koh-i-Noor" recalling to the Maharajah who had himself remarked that none of the kings who possessed the diamond before him had taken it away from this world along with himself, and so what would the Maharajah wish to be done with it .The Maharajah made a sign to say that the diamond should be sent to the temple of Jagannath .
Misar Beli Ram, being in charge of the Toshkhana , objected to it saying that it was the property of the crown and should not be thrown away in alms .
However Bhai Govind Ram remarked that this was for Kharak Singh to decide ..hearing which with wrinkles upon his forehead -two armlets with diamonds worth 2 lakhs , 5 lakh in cash and several order gold ornaments were given away in sankalp by the Maharajah .
After that removed all ornaments from his every limb of his body and making a prostration by resting his head upon the earth , gave them all also in Sankalp .
As the sun rose the next day the 27th of June 1839 ..it was the last time it was rising in the Land of Khalsa in the Kingdom of Punjab ruled by a Maharajah of Punjab -Ranjeet Singh .Within a few hours the Sarkar had nine successive motions and then his movements stopped and his pulse left altogether his normal course .Around noon the Sarkar got up amidst severe pain and uneasiness and when Raja Suchet Singh came the Sarkar opened his eye and cast an unconcerned look and closed his eyes .He was then made to lie straight upon bed with all the requisite things of the last sankalp-tulsi leaves , doshalas, gold ducats and linseed which after lighting a gold lamp were given away as sankalp.
Then they made him sit in a stool and washed his hairs with the water of the river Ganges and curd and the a new set of clothes were put on him .Bhai Govind Ram was seen to speak into the ears of the Sarkar words "Ram , Ram ,Ram" three times .The Sarkar repeated the words twice ...and he could not repeat the third time -Life had gone out of him by the way of his eyes .
At 5 p.m. on 27th June 1839 the Lion of Punjab breathed his last at the age of fifty eight years , seven months and sixty days -the total number of days the Lord had destined his presence on this land -which from this day onwards would never be the same .The land that was addressed as The Punjab like The United Sates ...would from this day onwards disintegrate ..........................
