Hazrat Daata Ganj Bakhsh Was a Great Sufi Scholar Of The 11Th Century A.D. With His Kind And Lovely Soft Teachings, He Contributed Greatly For The Spreading Of Islam in South Asia. Lahore Is Known As 'Daata Di Nagri' Due to Presence Of The Tomb Of This Great Sufi Hazrat Daata Ganj Bakhsh.
He Was Born Near Ghazni, Afghanistan. His Most Famous Work is 'Kashf Al Mahjub' Written in The Persian Language. It Discusses Treatises of Sufism.
The Tomb Premises Consists Upon a Large Marble Courtyard, a Mosque And Other Buildings. This Tomb Is The Most Frequently Visited Place In Lahore.
Hazrat Moinuddin Chishti First Came to Lahore To Pay His Respects at Daata Ganj-Bakhsh's shrine. Here He Spent His Time in Meditation. Before Going To Ajmer Sharif, Moinuddin Chishti Paid Homage to Hazrat Ali Hajvari In Persian Verse:

'The Great Sufi Master Hazrat Ali B Uthman Aljullabi Al Hujveri Widely Venerated In South Asia As Hazrat Datta Ganj Bukhsh Bestower Of Favours' Popularly Known As Hazrat Daata Sahib Is The Patron Saint Of Lahore. Appropriately Lahore Is Also Called Daata Di Nagri/ The Bestower' s City.
Daata Sahib Was Born In A Suburb Of Ghazni, Afghanistan In 400 A.H./1010 A.D. From A Paternal Side He Was A Descendant Of Hazrat Hassan Bin Ali And From The Maternal Side Of Hazrat Hussain Bin Ali, Grandsons Of The Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him).
In 1039 A.D He Settled In Lahore Spreading The Eternal Message Of Love And Tolerance. His Spiritual Silsilah/ Chain Connects Him Through The Master Al Junaid Of Baghdad To Hazrat Ali Bin Abi Talib, The Cousin And Son In Law Of The Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him).
A Leading Scholar Of His Age Wrote 10 Or More Works. Only The Kashf Ul Mahjub/Revelation Of unseen, The Oldest Persian Treatise, Is Extant And Continues To be Read. This Magnum Opus Provides A Complete System Of Sufism. He Died In 465 A.H/1072 A.D And Was Buried Close to The Mosque He Had Built Near This Site. For Centuries Daata Darbar/The Bestower's Court As His Shrine Is Popularly Known, Has Drawn People Of All Religious Beliefs.
Over The Centuries Leading Sufi Masters Have Visited This Mausoleum For Spiritual Guidance. These Include Khwaja Moin Ud-Din Chishti (536 A.H/1141 A.D- 633 A.H/1236 A.D) Of Ajmer India, Baba Farid Ganj Shakar Of Pakpattan (575 A.H/1174 A.D - 664 A.H/1265 A.D), Khwaja Baqi Billah (971 A.H/1564 A.D- 1012 A.H/1613 A.D), Mujadad Alf-i-Sani (971 A.H/1564 A.D- 1034 A.H/1624 A.D) And Hazrat Mian Mir (957 A.H/1550 A.D-1045 A.H/1653 A.D). The Shrine With The Green Dome Under Which He Is Buried Continues As A Centre Of (A Word Missing) Succour And Solace.'
