Statue of Ram Muhammad Singh Azad at Mohali, East Punjab, India

' Revolutionary Hero of Independence'





This photograph is of Statue of great Punjabi revolutionary nationalist and freedom fighter Shaheed Udham Singh (26 December 1899-31 July 1940) famous as Ram Muhammad Singh Azad Located at Mohali, East Punjab, India. He belonged to the Ghadar Party. He was the man who murdered Michael O' Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab on 13 March 1940 at London in revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919.

Udham Singh was born as Sher Singh on 26 December 1899, at Sunam  Punjab, India. His father's name was Tehal Singh Kamboj, who was a railway crossing watchman in the village of Upalli.


After the death of his father, he with his elder brother Mukta Singh Kamboj Were taken in by the Central Khalsa Orphanage Putlighar in Amritsar where he passed his matriculation examination in 1918 and left the orphanage in 1919.


Udham Singh was eye witness of Jallianwala Bagh Amritsar massacre took place on 13 April 1919. Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer ordered his troops to fire without warning on the innocent Indians. Udham Singh was deeply affected by this pathetic event. Udham Singh held Michael O'Dwyer  responsible for Jallianwala Bagh incident. He was deeply influenced by Bhagat Singh. Udham Singh became  revolutionary and joined Ghadar Party. He was sentenced to five years in prison for having unlicensed arms. On, 13 March 1940 in Caxton Hall, London, a meeting of East India Association and Royal Central Asian Society was being held when Udham Singh shooted Sir Michael O'Dwyer with his pistol. He did not try to escape and arrested by the Police. The murder case was processed by Justice Atkinson at the Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey. Justice Atkinson sentenced him to death. An appeal was that was filed by Udham Singh was dismissed on 15 July 1940. On 31 July 1940, Udham Singh was hanged in Pentonville Prison in London.
