Here, Exhibition of Arts and Industry was opened by Lieut. Governor Robert Montgomery on January 20,1864 A. D. The tollinton market was constructed in 1864 to house the first Punjab Exhibition and acted as Museum premises for next 30 years. The Tollinton market was renovated during 2002 to 2005 by Tajdeed - e - Lahore Committee. I couldn't found any foundation stone on the building of Tollinton Market Lahore.


After renovation, a commemorative stone was erected on the front wall of the Tollinton market Lahore. This commemorative stone reads as below :

These are photographs of English commemoratives flex and British times Monument of Lahore General Post Office situated at the junction of Nabha road with the Mall Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. This magnificent Monument was constructed in 1904 and now gained the status of landmark of the city of Lahore. This Building is a mixture of Muslim, Hindu and European styles of architecture.  The renovation work started in 1984 and continued for a number of years under the guidance and supervision of Renowned architect Mrs. Yasmeen Lari.

'Lahore GPO


The magnificent building of General Post Office Lahore, lovingly called by Lahorites as the GPO, is ideally located at McLeod road and the Mall. It sits at a corner where the old Nabha road meets the Mall at a sharp angle. This gives this building a special shape of a triangle with an open base and a flattened top. But this is not the building where the General Post Office of Lahore was first housed in the middle of the 19th Century. In some of General books on Lahore, it is only mentioned that the first General Post Office was located in Anarkali near the central museum. But certainly, both the Anarkali and the Lahore Museum were then not at their present locations. The entire length from the Lohari gate to Chauburji was then called Anarkali and according to one official letter dated 22nd September 1860 the Lahore Museum comprises was then located somewhere in Anarkali. The tollinton market was constructed in 1864 to house the first Punjab Exhibition and acted as Museum premises for next 30 year finally to be shifted to present Building on Shahrah e Quaid-e-Azam in 1894. The original building of General Post Office was located south of the present Tollinton market (1864) and east of the Punjab public library (1882). Here in 1849, was constructed a barrack like building to house the ever first post office of Lahore. It was headed by Mr. W. T. Clifford, the first postmaster who assume his charge on 12th June 1849 and lived in a large Bungalow situated closed by in an extensive compound. The Postmaster of Lahore then used to work under the Postmaster General of the North Western Provinces with his headquarters at Agra. Although after 1849,some additions were made to the post office building but soon the Postmaster General felt that the accommodation hardly sufficient for the staff. Besides, he had certain reservations about the very site of Post Office. The Lahore Cantonment, then located in old Anarkali was being shifted to Mian Mir (Present day Lahore Cantonment) and several buildings in Anarkali were vacated. Mr. B. Riddal, the Postmaster General of the North Western Provinces, therefore wrote in March 1852 to the secretary, board of Administration Punjab, inviting his attention to his earlier letterof November 10th 1851 and requested him to allot one of the houses vacated by the Army officers in Anarkali for the use as post office. The request of the Postmaster General, however, could not be acceded and deferred. By October 1862, there was appointed a separate Postmaster General for Punjab. The Lahore GPO continued to work in its old location in Anarkali. By the year 1883, it had only three branch offices in Lahore, one each at railway Station, Moti Bazar and Lohari mandi. A horse-dak used to ply along the grand trunk road to Ferozepur and a male cart ran daily from Lahore to Mian Mir. Besides, there were pillar-post boxes cleared three times a day. No business was transacted on Sundays,New years days, Good Friday, the queen's birthday and Christmas day. As late as 1876 packages were received at the Lahore GPO in Anarkali for despatches by Government bullock train 24 stations from Peshawar to Ferozepur. This was the time when several of prestigious buildings which today are regarded as landmark of the city of Lah

It was initially built as Jubilee Museum and Technical Institute in 1890 A. D. Presently Lahore Museum comprises the galleries i, e Pre and Proto Historic Gallery, Hindu Buddhist and Jain Gallery, Sadequain Gallery, Ethnological Gallery, Coins and Medals gallery, Contemporary craft gallery, Pakistan Movement gallery, Pakistan postage stamps gallery, Jain Gallery, Ethnological Gallery-II and III (Fabrics), Miniature paintings gallery, Contemporary paintings Gallery, General gallery, Manuscript & Calligraphies gallery and Fakir Khana Collection. There is also a Auditorium Hall, a Library and a library cum committee room in the building of Lahore Museum.

Old commemorative stone well preserved in glass cases provides this information :


'Jubilee Museum and Technical Institute

This stone was laid by his Royal Highness Prince Albert Victor of Wales K. G. K. P.
February 3rd 1890.'

Another commemorative metal plate in Urdu speaks as under :

' Honorable Field Marshal Muhammad Ayub Khan, Nishan e Pakistan, Halal e Jurrat, President of the country Inaugurated this Museum after reorganization on Tuesday 28 November 1967 A. D according 25 Shaban 1387 Hijri'

According to the website of YMCA, 'The Lahore YMCA has a proud tradition of service to Pakistan since 1876. The YMCA has been famous as a venue for historical meetings, social events and imparting quality education. In this fast changing world, YMCA provides increased educational opportunities to learn and have beneficial educational experience in different avenues of learning. YMCA Lahore arranges art and design classes, NCA and PU preparation classes, Language classes, Computer courses, Executive Secretarial Courses, beautician classes, aerobics & Zumba fitness studio, Performing arts classes, Music classes and Mobile phone engineering for the learners.

Prof. Dr. Ibad Nabeel Shad Ex Secretary told me that weekly literary and critical sessions of famous Punjabi literary organization Punjabi Adbi Sangat Lahore had been held at YMCA building from 1961 to 2002.


I found five commemorative stones erected at the building of YMCA Lahore that reads as following :


1- 'In Memoriam B. L. Rallia Ram who ably and faithfully served this Y. M. C. A. For 36 years, chiefly as General Secretary. Died in Lahore on May 5, 1953. ''The Lord Redeemeth the soul of his servants :And none of them that trust in Him Shall be Desolate.'' Psalm 34:22.'

2- ' In Memoriam Major Edward Newbery B. Sc.
The fouder of this Y. M. C. Association in Lahore who died at Simla June 2nd, 1884.

(The abbreviation  stands for "T.H." for 'Territory of Hawaii' as this state was called between the period between 1898 and 1959. Later on it was adopted as the 50th State of USA.)

Our administration is much happy to share the photographs of English commemoratives stones/ boards and 155 years old British times grand beautiful building of Government College Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Government College Lahore was established in the year 1864 and upgraded as Government College University in 2002. Government College Lahore is the first modern Educational institution of Punjab and one of the oldest institution of Sub-continent. It was opened on 1st January 1864 in the haveli of Dhian Singh/Khushal Singh, in Lahore's Walled City. It shifted to a large Bungalow near Anarkali in 1871 and then it moved to Rahim Khan's Kothi in 1873. The College shifted to present Building in 1876. The construction of present building had started almost in mid 1872 and was completed in 1877.The building of Government College Lahore was designed by W. Purdon Superintendent Engineer and constructed under the supervision of Executive Engineer Kannhaiya Lal.

According to the Prospectus 2017 of GC University Lahore 'This institution takes pride in being the oldest institution of Pakistan, having presently 11263 students and 515 members of faulty. It is a centre of academic excellence and intellectual development in the country. Graduates from the University continue to be leaders in all walks of life, steered by three basic guidinf principles: Efficacy, relevance and quality. GC University provides education from undergraduate level to Ph.D in various disciplines of Science and Technology, Arts and Social Sciences and languages. Various societies such as Dramatic Society and Debating Society also work to enhance the abilities of students. Ravi is name of student magazine at GC University Lahore. The Monogram contains these words 'Courage To Know'. It is a dream of every shining student to get admission in GC University Lahore.

Important historical facts written on commemorative stones erected at Government College University Lahore read as under:

1 -  'This library erected at a cost of over Rs. 1,30,000 to which men and women of all communities subscribed over 75,000. The balance being contributed by the Punjab Government was opened by his Excellency Sir Henry D. Craik, Bart. K. C. I. C., Governor of the Punjab on 24th of October 1939.'

These are photographs of English commemoratives stone and British times building of Kasur Industrial School Located at Dhorr Kot Kasur, Punjab, Pakistan. This school was Opened in nearly 1875-76 but found no Commemorative stone of that date. It was built with the funds issued by Muncipal Comittee Kasur. This Building Was constructed in 1915. The foundation stone was laid by Herbert Alexander Casson Esquire, C. S. I., the then Commissioner Lahore Division on 23rd February 1915 A. D.

Now the office of civil defense Kasur is working in this British times building.

Herbert Alexander Casson

Herbert Alexander Casson was born in circa 1867. He was the son of George Casson and Frances Hutton Long Gilbert. He married Gertrude Russell, daughter of Captain Andrew Hamilton Russell.Educated at  Newton  Abbot  Propriety college, Marlborough College and  Hertford College. He did I.C.S in 1886. Came to India in 1889. Additional District Magistrate Bannu from 28 December 1893. Deputy Commissioner of Jhelum district ( 1896-1897, 1899-1900).The Commissioner of Lahore Division (19??-1919).The Commissioner of Ambala Division (1919-1921).President of Punjab legislative  council (1922-1925), died in 1952

Gulab Devi Tuberculosis Hospital For Women located at Ferozpur Road Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan

These are photographs of English, Hindi commemorative stones and Pre-partitiion building of Shrimati Gulab Devi Tuberculosis Hospital For Women located at Ferozpur Road Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Great Philanthropist of British India Lala Lajpat Rai built this hospital in loving Memory of his dear mother Shrimati Gulab Devi who died of Tuberculosis at the same spot. Lala Lajpat Rai established a Trust in 1927 to build TB Hospital for women. The Trust purchased 40 acres of land in April 1930 from the British Government which gave a free grant of an additional 10 acres on Ferozpur Road. The Construction work was started in 1931 and completed in 1934. Gulab Devi Tuberculosis Hospital For Women was opened by Mahatma Gandhi on July 17th 1934. After independence, Begum Raana Liaquat Ali Khan, Syed Maratab Ali, Prof. Dr. Amiruddin, Syed Maratab Ali, Syed Wajid Ali, Syed Shahid Ali, Mrs. Manzoor Ellahi, Mr.N.A Haroon, Maulvi Karamatullah, Sh.Muhammad Ilmas and Sh.Ahmed Husnain were the famous personalities who worked in Board of Trustees. Hospital is affiliated with Fatima Jinnah Medical College for undergraduate studies.

Hindu Widows Home Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan

These are photographs of English commemorative stone and beautiful building of Hindu Widows Home located at Lower mall Islampura Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. It was a shelter home for Hindu Widows. It is one of the British times Monuments designed and built by great Philanthropist of his times named Sir Ganga Ram in 1921 A. D.


Hindu Widows Home Lahore was opened by His Highness Sir Edward Maclagan K. C. S. I., K. C. I. E, the then British Governor of the Punjab Province on Wednesday the 6th April 1921 A. D. It is Gift of one who feels for Widows. It worked as 'Hindu Widows Home' till Partition of Sub-continent and then abandoned as Hindu Widows migrated to India.



 From 1971, Fountain House (Institute For Mental Health) is working in the building of Hindu Widows Home Lahore. According to a Urdu pamphlet published by the Administration of Fountain House Lahore, It provides health facilities for psychologically and mentally disturbed national and international patients. Here, the patients are called as members. At this time, 550 psycho patients including 100 women are under treatment process in Fountain House Lahore, Farooqabad and Sargodha. From 1971 till now, Over fifty thousands mental patients have gotten treatment from Fountain House. Institute for Disadvantaged Children, Haroon Rasheed Vocational and Rehabilitation Center and Primary Health Care Centers of Farooqabad and Lalyaan are providing health and rehabilitation services for mentally sick and drug addicted patients. The monthly expenditure of Fountain House is rupees 1450000. Government assists with 500000 rupees. This institution earns 2000000 rupees from rich members (patients). Remaining 12000000 rupees are collected with struggle by national and international donations.


It worked to heal the mankind in both statuses as Hindu Widows Home and Fountain House.
