College Church at Lawrence College Ghora Gali Murree



These are photographs of English commemorative stones and exterior and interior of British times grand majestic building of college church located inside Lawrence College Ghora Gali Murree Hills, Punjab, Pakistan. The clock tower of college church is associated with Bishop Durrant. College church is constructed with stone bricks.

A memorial plaque affixed inside college church reveals a interesting love story of Rev. George C. Peake Principal (1874-1904) whose beloved wife Mary Janet Peake died here in Murree on June 20,1902. Mary Janet Peake was buried here in small British Cemetery inside Lawrence College Murree near College church. After retirement, Mr. Rev. George C. Peake returned to England and died in 1920. According to his will, his remains were cremated and buried in her sweet wife 's grave in this cemetery.

It is written under the painting with colorful glasses at interior front wall. This painting shines with sunlight :

' In the glory of God & in proud and affectionate memory of the those Gallians who gave their lives for King and Empire in the Great War 1914-1919. Their name liveth for evermore.'


Here affix some more memorial plaquees that reads as under:


1- 'In loving Memory of the Right Rev Henry Bickersteth Durrant D. D., C. B. E., 4th Bishop of Lahore who died at Lahore 16-1-1932. A much loved Father-in-God. The Chapel Tower enshrines his memory.'


2 - 'In proud and affectionate memory of old boys who died during the Great War 1914-1919. The East window has been dedicated.

Sgt. H. J. Dingavan 8th Heavy Bty, R. F. A., Mesopotamia, 1919, 26 years.

And several others who names are unknown. Their names liveth for evermore. '


3-' In affectionate memory of Rev. George C. Peake Principal 1874-1904. Afterwards Rector of Louth Lincolnshire died in England 1920. Remains cremated and buried in her wife 's grave in this Cemetery. Also of his wife Mary Janet Peake who died here in June 20,1902. Their devotion to the school is gratefully remembered.'


4- 'To the glory of God and sacred to the memory of the Reverend William Thomas Wright C. I. E., M. A., V. D. Canon of Lahore Cathedral, Director of Public Instruction Punjab from 29-11-19 to 20-12-20. Principal Lawrence College from 1922 to 1934. For twelve years he devoted himself to the welfare of the College and the boys and girls in it. Born Sep. 12th 1863 Died July 26th 1938. "A wise Master Builder". This memorial is erected by old Gallians and other friends. 1945.'

5-' Sacred to the memory of Thomas Bernard Floyed Clerk and Steward, Lawrence College, 1921-28. Who died at Rawalpindi, December 26th 1928, Aged 50. The chancel marble pavement was placed in this Chapel which he loved, in token of affectionate Rememberanc by members of the College. '

6-' Re-Dedication of the College Chapel performed by Lt. Gen. Khalid Maqbool, HI(M), HI, Honorable Governor, Punjab, Chairman Board of Governors on 13 Nov, 2007. Principal Air Cdre (Retd) Farooq H. Kiyani'.
