' Father of Sergery'





This photograph is of Statue of great ancient Indian Physician Sushruta, the Father of Surgery located inside The Royal Australian College of Surgery Melbourne, Australia. He is also known as the father of plastic surgery. His contributions include the fields of Physiology, aetiology, embryology, metabolism and immunity.


It is written on commemorative stone erected at the base of the Statue of Sushruta:



'Sushruta (ca 600BCE) Father of Surgery


Sushruta was an ancient Indian Physician. He is considered to be the father of Sergery. His text books had 184 chapters, described 1120 illnesses, 700 medicinal plants and 64 mineral preparations. He did many procedures such as incisions, probing, surgery for hemorrhoids and fistulae, as well as cateract surgery. He is also known as the father of plastic surgery. His contributions include the fields of Physiology, aetiology, embryology, metabolism and immunity. Sushruta is the Pioneer of 300 different types of operations and he described 125 surgerical instruments including the endoscope.
