Jewish Beth El Synagogue Kolkata, West Bangal, India

These are some Photographs Of English Commemorative Stones and Exterior and interior of Old Beautiful Building Of Jewish Beth- El Synagogue Located at 26, Pollock St, Chitpur, Barabazar Market, Kolkata, West Bangal, India. Beth- El Synagogue Means House of God. It was constructed in 1856 A. D. The Caretaker of Jewish Beth- El Synagogue is Muslim.


Corner Stone of Beth- El Synagogue Kolkata Describes As Below :

' The Corner Stone of New Premises The Jewish Girls School laid by David Elias David Ezra Esob Sheriff of Calcutta and his wife Mrs. Rachel Ezra Assisted by the founder Hony Secretary & Treasurer Rev. Elias Moses Duek Cohen on Sunday 27th June 1926.'


Another English Commemorative Stone Shouts As Below :

' To the Pious Memory of the Congregation, The Founders: David Joseph Ezra and Ezekiel Judah of blessed Rememberanc who in A. M 5616 Purchased this Site and Theron at the cost of Rupees Fifty Thousand Erected this Synagogue. BETHEL And in eternal gratitude and in A. M 5640 of its meritorious President President Elias Shalome Subban Esquire., Whom may God Preserve : who at his own cost renewed the same Extending it by three chambers Raising the Centre on massive columns with lofty arches and ornamental windows, Marbling the floor and furnishing Additional requirements and who lately, in the current year 5654 happily inspired, completed the whole work, Strengthening the walls adding two Qalleries to the Azarath Nasheem and replacing the heavy pillars by elegant iron columns, adding light, space and improvement to the general aspect.

Thus fulfilling

This is my God, and to this glory
3 will prepare this temple
The whole at a cost of about Rs. 10000.

' BETH- EL SYNAGOGUE


This synagogue has two sets of history initially it was built by David Joseph Ezra  and Ezekiel Judah in the year 1856 and at a later stage was modified and expanded by Elias Shalome Gubbay.


SOME FEATURES OF THE SYNAGOGUE:-

Two upper-level galleries for the ladies one on each side
Iron columns
Marble floors
Ornamental windows
Provision of Mikveh (baths)
Winepress at the basement
Traditional ovens for baking Matzoth/Matzo (bread prepared during Passover)
The original Jewish Girls School was actually established in the building right opposite to this synagogue. Later on, this was shifted to their current premises at Park Street. A stone tablet in the basement written in Hebrew and English bears its original legacy. Now, this building houses the post office and other private offices.

The wine press at the basement is not open to the public and is currently being restored slowly.'
