Samadhi of Sir Ganga Ram located on Ravi Road Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan

'Son of Punjab'



All these photographs are of English commemorative Board and well preserved Samadhi of Sir Ganga Ram located on Ravi Road Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan.


Sir Ganga Ram was a great son of Punjab born in 1851 at Village Mangtanwala,64 km from Lahore. He always proved a brilliant and excellent student. He studied in famous educational institutions of Sub-continent i, e Government College Lahore and Thompson Engineering College at Roorkee. He achieved his goal and bacame an  engineer and an architect. Sir Ganga Ram constructed high court, Cathedral, Chief’s college, water works, Hailey hall for the Punjab University, Lahore Museum, Mayo School of Arts (National College of Arts Lahore), General Post Office building, Albert Victor Wing of the Lahore Mayo Hospital, Government College’s Chemical laboratory, Sir Ganga Ram hospital and Model Town.
He leased barren land in Montgomery and Lyallpur from Punjab government. By using modern irrigation methods, he turned the barren land into fertile land. He was a great Philanthropist of Punjab.


The samadhi of Sir Ganga Ram is  looked after by Evacuee Trust Property Board.


Ganga Ram died in London where his body was cremated. His ashes were brought back to India. Some of his ashes was drop in Ganga River and the rest buried in Lahore in this Samadhi.

Sir Ganga Ram was Executive Engineer by profession and a man behind the modern construction of various Lahore buildings like museum, Aitchison college, Mayo School of Arts, Lahore High Court, GPO, Government College 's Chemistry Block and Mayo Hospital' s Albert Wing. Being a Philanthropist, he built Sir Ganga Ram Free Hospital, Hailey College of Commerce, Lady Melagon Girls High school, Ravi Road Orphanage, Sir Ganga Ram Trust Building on the Mall and a couple of societies for Hindu and Sikh Widow, he also established a Hydropower Station at Renala Khurd in 1925.'
